I am so glad you asked how you can protect your voice before you leave for your tour. Your daily mantra must be “hydration and sleep!” One of the biggest mistakes singers make in rehearsals is singing with a full out stage voice. If you’re hashing through changes on a song, sing in a quieter head voice. Another faux-pas is warming up too much before your gig. Here’s an outline for how you should plan your day:
  • Wake up and start drinking water. Don’t speak loudly. Do some lip trills to warm up the cords. Stretch your body and get the blood moving before you sing. Eat a healthy breakfast.
  • When you are awake and refreshed, do your vocal warm-up. If you have a packed day of rehearsals and gigs, limit your warm-up to about 20 minutes.
  • At rehearsals during multiple takes on a song, only sing it full out once or twice.
  • Prior to your gig, only warm up for about 5 minutes - you’ve already been singing enough through the day.
  • After your gig, warm down the voice with lip trills or humming through a straw.
  • If you are in a loud club after the gig, refuse to speak loudly and instead, text to those around you.
  • Limit alcohol, caffeine and smoking as they all dry the vocal cords.
  • Throughout the day, drink water and during meals choose water heavy foods like cucumbers, celery, watermelon, etc.
  • If at any time during the tour you feel compromised with your voice, contact your voice coach and/or find an ENT near the gig city.
