You are absolutely correct that too much vocal warm-up exhausts your voice before a gig! Your main warm-up should be earlier in the day and spend 30 minutes to an hour warming up. Right before your gig, just do a few siren slides, lip trills, ascend and descend on the word “hey,” and physically stretch your body. You are already warmed up from earlier in the day so you just need to remind your vocal cords that it’s time to work. Stay fresh for your gig. You want your audience to hear you at your best, not the folks backstage!
